The story of Porsche cars starts with the remarkable Ferdinand Porsche, a distinguished Czechoslovakian automobile designer, who worked for Logner, Austro-Daimler, Mercedes and Steyr from 1905 to the 1930s. During the war Porsche was heavily involved in tank and military design and for this work was imprisoned by the French. After his release from jail in 1947, when 71 years old, Porsche set about rebuilding his company with his son, Ferry. The Porsches started work on a VW-inspired sports car which resulted in the appearance of the 356 car in 1951. This was the beginning of the Porsche success story. Anders Clausager recounts this story through all the themes and variations; from the classic 911 through the racy cars of the 1960s and the legendary 917/30, to the VW-Porsche collaboration which produced the 924.

Since first designed in 1963, some 190,000 911s have been built. The car continues to sell well today because, despite having the same body, the engine has been refined to keep apace of engineering development.
