The eighteen parchments are translated as ‘letters from God’ - philosophical meditations that seem to respond to the pain and bewilderment being felt by the town in the aftermath of the tragedy.

Brendan’s investigations into the mystery of the parchments take him to unexpected and unsettling places: wartime Germany, a boxing gym in a deprived part of Manchester, and a former colony for the feebleminded; they also lead him into the homes and secrets of the village’s inhabitants. He begins to piece together the extraordinary story behind the documents. And gradually, for the first time since the death of his own child, which robbed him of any faith in a grand design for the universe, Brendan Moon begins to wonder.
