Court Arts of Indonesia accompanies one of the three major exhibitions of the Festival of Indonesia, a celebration taking place throughout the United States. The Festival provides an opportunity for Americans to become familiar with the traditions of Indonesia - the world’s fifth largest country - a vast archipelago with more than 13,000 islands and 200 languages. Court Arts of Indonesia focuses on a particularly telling aspect of Indonesia: the numerous royal courts that once governed the various islands and island groups of the archipelago. These courts, which shaped the development of diverse societies with distinctive material, spiritual, and intellectual cultures, offer a natural microcosm of the evolution of Indonesian civilization and provide the basis for one of the most comprehensive analyses of Indonesian art ever attempted.

More than 200 illustrations, including 140 plates in full color, reveal treasured objects of the court tradition from the eight century C.E. to the present and from every region of Indonesia’s vast territory. Included are dazzling jewelry, gem-studded ritual vessels, state crowns set with diamonds, sumptuous royal textiles, regalia, sculptures, musical instruments, manuscripts, masks, shadow puppets, and many outstanding examples of the kris, the legendary daggerlike weapon that epitomizes Indonesia’s famed metalwork. An entire chapter is devoted to court architecture, possibly the highest manifestation of Indonesian culture.

Deze grote, prachtige catalogus van de gelijknamige expositie laat de lezer kennis maken met de kunst en levensstijl van de vele Indonesische vorstenhoven die ooit de archipel onder zich verdeelden. Het bevat de periode vanaf de eerste Ned.-Ind. contacten [16e - 17e eeuw] tot na de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Luisterrijke pracht wordt geboden: architectuur, regalia, sacrale wapens zoals krissen en pieken, goud en edelstenen, kostbare weefsels en kledingstukken, offergereedschap, houtsnijwerk, maskers, wayang, manuscripten etc., deels in kleur [zoveel mogelijk] of in zwart-wit afgebeeld. Het boek is een standaardwerk geworden en voor de Nederlandse lezer dubbel interessant omdat vele voorwerpen bruiklenen zijn van Nederlandse musea die niet zelden de mooiste voorwerpen uit dit gebied bezitten. Behalve catalogus is dit boek een onvervangbaar lees- en kijkboek dat zonder de expositie prima te gebruiken is. Met uitgebreide literatuuropgave en jaartallenlijst van de derde eeuw tot 1950. De papieren omslag van het boek toont een unieke Sumatraanse kris. Dit is een van de mooiste boeken over de Indonesische cultuur, misschien wel het mooiste. [NBD|Biblion recensie, Drs.
