Selected papers from 42nd Congress, Istanbul 2006. Edited by Zeynep Merey Enlil and Pablo Vaggione.
During the last few decades, globalisation induced in our cities and societies dramatic transformations which have generated a host of issues pertaining to economic, social, cultural and spatial integration and disintegration. Whilst cities are striving to connect to the global economy and gain advantage within a highly competitive market, forces of globalisation tend to create inequalities, widen the gap between the rich and the poor and exacerbate polarisation.
‘Cities between Integration and Disintegration: Opportunities and Challenges’ contains a rich array of studies by expert urbanists and planners demonstrating how cities from all over the world have been reshaped by the integrative and disintegrative forces of globalisation. It includes papers describing urban landscapes that resulted from these forces as well as essays depicting how they are accommodated or responded by planning initiatives in different contexts. As a selection of papers presented at the 42ndPlanning Congress of the International Society of City and Regional Planners [ISOCARP], held in Istanbul in collaboration with the Department of City and Regional Planning of Yildiz Technical University, the book offers a broad perspective on the multi-faceted issues surrounding the dilemma of urban integration and disintegration.
