In this abridged edition I have tried to preserve as much of the contents, style and spirit of the original as could be achieved within the limits imposed to me. Whether I have succeeded in this endeavour must be left to the judgment of the reader. Needless to say I have made no alteration whatever in the American spelling of the original.
